Been out of work since 2018. Every company passes on me. Long post, so be warned.

I’ve worked in tech since 2004. I didn’t go to college due to extreme poverty growing up, but I had a good run for many years, leapfrogging every few years to boost my income. At the height of my career, I was pulling down $250k/year and getting interviews left and right from big-name companies.

In late 2018, I went on LTD from my job due to depression and burnout as a result of a toxic relationship. I had every intention of going back to my job, when my ex had me arrested in early 2019 out of the blue one night. She made up a convincing enough story to earn me a felony for malicious mischief, as well as a domestic violence misdemeanor. I have never put a hand on her, but she hit herself and claimed I did it. The cops sided with her, and I wound up being beaten in the doorway to my apartment, and hauled off to jail for the first time in my life.

I served four months in county jail, and ended up with two years of probation. My attorney was not helpful, saying if I took the case to trial, I would lose and go to prison based on the body cam footage, and entered a guilty plea on my behalf. I didn’t know any better, and have no support system. I’m currently in appeals, but that’s a time-consuming process with little chance for success.

As a result of the arrest, I was terminated from a job I had for over five years, lost my stock options, insurance, and home. My ex had also drained my bank accounts, so I was left with $85 to my name and nowhere to go. For the entirety of 2019 and 2020, I was on the streets, up until this month when I was able to get into transitional housing after wandering around the state.

I got a little bit of money from my mom’s estate to get my phone turned on, and checked LinkedIn and Indeed. During the time I was offline, I had still attracted recruiters, but not many. I talked to a person from Facebook, but that didn’t go anywhere because they do coding interviews. I don’t have a laptop, and I haven’t written a line of code in nearly three years, so that was a hard no. On Friday, I had the founder of a small company express interest in me and set up a video interview. That one also passed on me because I don’t have production experience with AWS. When I said I hadn’t written any Python in a couple of years, they said “you can just go online and practice”, and still passed on me because of the lack of exposure with AWS.

I’m not sure what I can do to make money, since all of my skills were in DevOps and software engineering. On top of that, I have a felony over my head, which is an instant stop for most companies. I have a LLC registered to my name that I’ve been trying to get consulting gigs, but I’m not good at marketing or sales.

Am I just screwed and fated to poverty? My parents are both dead, so it’s not like I can move in with one of them. I’m in a town where I don’t know anyone, and most of the jobs here are retail/food service and part-time on top of that. I’ve never worked in those areas, so I’m sure I wouldn’t do well knowing what I know about technology. I’ve done Unix/Linux systems administration for a large portion of my career, in addition to software development and DevOps/cloud engineering. I don’t have any exposure with Microsoft, so anything with their products is pretty much out.
