Looking for advice on how to politely turn down a request by my manager without seeming like a slacker. I’ve only been in my position for 6 months. My manager approached me the other day to ask if I could volunteer on this project committee that would be at least 20-25 hrs a week (in addition to my regular 40 hrs/week). While I don’t think I’m being voluntold, he strongly suggested that it would be “great” if I did this. I’m flattered that he thinks I can do this. But it doesn’t sound like there would be any reduction in my current duties and this project would clearly be an absolute ton of work around defining policies. It’s not something that I excel at. I wouldn’t get paid any extra/overtime. And more importantly I just don’t want to do it. I’ve been under a lot of stress due to working virtually and some personal issues and as a result I have some stress related health issues that I’m dealing with right now. I’ve had to take several sick days as a result. Honestly I’m having a hard time coping with my current workload let alone taking on more. I’m just starting to get my health issues under control and trying to develop a healthier work life balance. So I just don’t feel that I can cope with the additional stress of this extra work. I don’t really even think it’s a reasonable request. How can I politely turn this down without seeming like I don’t take initiative or that I’m a slacker? I feel like because I’m the new person that I still need to prove myself but honestly I’m just doing my best to try to get by and I can’t take on this extra project.
