Getting references from my current employer

I am employed in a job that I don't like anymore and would like to apply on a few job offers I saw online. However, I am scared that if someone wants to hire me, they would ask for job references and I would have to get them from the company that I currently work for. The boss really likes me, but there is no way I could ask them to give me references for a job.. in another company. I know most people look for jobs when currently employed, but how do you guys do it?
