A Monday Motivation Story For You All

After applying for jobs endlessly for the past year, I am FINALLY employed with an awesome career boosting job.

This past year has been rough. I've been working in an industry that was smashed by the pandemic. So every career option I am qualified for isn't hiring for the foreseeable future, and everyone in my network is basically also fired and looking for their own jobs. I've been cut to half time and less than half pay since last March.

The mental state that job seekers are in right now can make it much tougher than it already is to get up every day and write killer cover letters, and research companies that actually fit for you to apply. But all it takes is one job to say yes. I have applied to 53 jobs, and after a full year had no interviews until just this month. And 53 applications is nothing compared to how many one should actually be applying for so I got lucky. Just keep getting yourself out there!

Story: I had asked an old colleague to look over my resume for any spelling and grammar errors. A month later she reached out to me to offer a role on her team that had opened up, and said she had recommended me to apply since we worked well together before. Score! The salary was a pretty substantial pay cut and the company sounded so boring but I was not in a place to say no. So I hyped myself up, submitted a killer cover letter, did my best through two rounds of interviews and then got denied SO FAST I was almost worried I said something to offend them.

To add insult to injury I found out my younger ex-colleague with less experience actually got the role. (He is awesome and a great person though so if anyone got it, I'm glad it's him). He started interviewing after me, so they definitely just denied me without having another candidate, ouch. After getting denied for the original job, even after a referral I thought I was screwed. My resume is very strong, I came recommended and I still couldn't get a boring, (much) lower salary than industry average job?! I was really down on myself.

But I got back on the wagon and applied to just one job that day. It was all I could motivate myself to do after crying, spiraling into self doubt, and considering becoming a stripper or sugar baby.

The one company I applied to that day emailed me that same night to start with a phone interview, and four intensive interviews later I got the job! If I hadn't had the practice and also learned what I could do better from following up with my colleague who referred me to the previous role, I would have never been ready to crush this new interview process. And this new job not only pays almost double, but I love the company as well.

TLDR; being denied for a job was the best thing that could have happened

Hang in there and good luck out there folks!
