Long story short one of my current coworkers mentioned her husbands workplace has some new job openings and I decided to inquire because the jobs are similar. Basically I work as a CO in juvenile corrections and this new job would be residential, treatment for at risk troubled youth who were abused or have behavioral issues. With both jobs I'm dealing with difficult kids. I compared base compensation and benefits as outlined below. New job also has some quality of life improvements such as being 15 minutes from home vs 30, allowed to wear whatever I want and have cellphone on me, and permanent dayshift schedule where I always have Fridays and Saturdays off, current job rotates nights and weekends.
Compensation & Benefits Comparison Base Compensation • CJ - 2,184 (84 bi-weekly) hours guaranteed at 16.84 hourly = 36,778.56 a year base pay • NJ - Comparable at 2,080 (80 bi-weekly) hours guaranteed at 17.68 hourly = 36,774.40 a year base pay Health Insurance • CJ – Value plan free with wellness participation, 1,000$ deductible • NJ – High deductible plan 93.89$ monthly, 2,800$ deductible 1,126,68$ more yearly with an 1,800$ increase in deductible, .54 additional cents in base compensation for 18.22 total hourly would make yearly base pay comparable when factoring in additional cost of health insurance. Retirement & Savings • CJ –Matches 14% of bi-weekly wages (Pension program) • NJ – Matches 5% of bi-weekly wages (403b) Paid time off & Holiday • CJ – 120 hours paid sick leave, 104 hours of paid vacation. 10 paid federal holiday per year, triple pay received on holidays worked, 12 hours compensation received on days not worked. • NJ – 192 hours paid vacation, 6 paid holidays, paid 8 additional hours on days worked, and 8 on days not worked. Annual Bonuses & Raises • CJ – 2 to 3.5% yearly base pay increase with potential for more, 1,000 to 1,500$ Christmas bonus. • NJ – Comparable, quarterly bonuses Dental + Life + HAS + Other • Comparable between both jobs
New job offered 18.50 hourly. My main concern is that I just won't like working at the new job despite the similarities, especially going from a maximum security environment to an open facility where the youth are never locked down. I did take a tour of the new jobs facilities and they seemed nice. Another factor is new job offers some tuition reimbursement if I decide to pursue a degree, which would also open up the door to more opportunities for advancement. Current job has 4 supervisory roles that people hold onto for years. It should be noted that I only have a high school education, no degree. Thoughts?
