I technically am still a consultant at my consulting firm. I haven't quit my current job. My consulting firm sucks so bad. They put me on a project that I'm underqualified for due to a lack of training and the project has gone so bad. They hired another, more experienced consultant to help me out. He and I have been talking since last week and he shares many frustrations with our firm. They basically set their consultants up for failure. It's a long story but know that it's good money.
OK, so I basically applied for a Senior HRIS Analyst job and there were some red flags. The recruiter called me 2 hours after I applied. Their entire interview process took about a week. They nearly hired me on the spot but extended me the offer the following evening.
Red flags:
- The Head of HR is showing signs of incompetence. He's a VP of HR and doesn't have a background in HRIS so this is basically a stand alone position meaning I will have little to no support. When my offer letter was sent to me, it had all kinds of misspellings. I brought this to his attention and it took two more drafts for him to get it right. SMH. This is unacceptable. I had to sign a paper offer letter so they're behind in technology.
- This job is a $30k paycut but offers better insurance than what I have now. My medicine costs thousands of dollars a month and I am paying a lot for my current health insurance plan out of pocket. I can't justify the $30k paycut, pandemic or not.
- I would be commuting over 2 hours one way to the job.
- The recruiter called me tonight saying my background check isn't complete and that they were pushing back my start date by one week. I basically told the recruiter that they as a company made a decision to have me start right after a holiday and they should have known that courts would be delayed or closed. I told the recruiter that I need to start tomorrow so make an exception and let me start and basically if something comes back on my background (which it won't) to handle it then. Why not call me Friday to tell me this? It's not like you knew courts wouldn't be closed on the weekend!
- I have anxiety about this job. I just have a bad feeling. I actually cried all day today because i'm so anxious.
- The VP of HR, my manager wants me to come into the office in person because "i'm a new hire". SMH. I've worked plenty of jobs before remote and onboarded just fine. It's a pandemic. Why do I need to come into the office when i'm not essential and we have laptops? That's putting me at risk!
- They offered me only two weeks vacation with no other PTO policy. That's disgusting! I've always gotten 3-5 weeks at my other jobs.
- The VP of HR described the company as "being ran like a start up".
I needed something to get out of my horrible consulting role but now i'm thinking it's best to just stay with them a few more weeks until I find something better. My consulting position pays $15 more an hour than this new position and they allow me to work from home and even though I don't like it and it's temporary, I could use the money. Once my consulting job is over, I can collect unemployment (I have an open claim valid for another 10 months and can collect).
Should I even show up tomorrow? I'm in the running for a number of other jobs that I interviewed for the week before Christmas at better companies but the holidays slowed everything down. I accepted the position because I had an offer on the table and they had a very quick process but I see many red flags. I don't know if it's worth it at this point. I was going to just tell my consulting firm that I can only work nights this week which is fine because I work on my own time anyway and the client is on the east coast whereas I'm on the west coast so they are not expecting me to be online allday. They only care if the work is done. I don't want to quit my consulting job if this position is going to be worse. I would essentially receive double pay for this week and it would allow me to test out the new job but with such a long commute and the incompetence that has been shown to me so far, I don't know if it's even worth showing up for.
