How to switch from my current job in mental health to become a freelance illustrator/graphic designer?
My ideal job is to become a freelance illustrator/graphic designer.
I currently work in mental health and the issue is that I bring a lot of work home, especially if clients have safety concerns. I get positive feedback from supervisors, but the job makes me anxious because I deal with crisis situations. I’m finding it very difficult to draw/do art during my time off because I’m so emotionally exhausted.
I am considering quitting this job and becoming a waitress or work in customer service (ideally working 30 hours a week) to pay the bills consistently and then also build a freelance art business at the same time. I know being a waitress is exhausting, but at the very least I will leave my work at work, so I can focus on art at home, and I will not feel so stressed.
I’m planning on starting an Etsy shop, buying a camera and doing small photo shoots, selling prints, drawings, one day learning how to make murals, and learning adobe illustrator and photoshop so I can draw virtually, and learn graphic design. I would make my own website and promote myself on Instagram as well. I’m very motivated to be an artist or be a “creative” in any sort of manner, and I feel like I’d stay on top of the business.
Then eventually, I would try to become a full-time freelance artist.
Does this sound like a good idea? I feel like it’s risky to quit my current job and become a waitress, but I genuinely believe I’m on the wrong career path anyways. Everyone’s telling me to stick it out because I’m working at a prestigious hospital and doing fine, but I feel like I would be successful as an artist, and I’d be happier.
I’ll also add that I have the technical art skills. I definitely need to improve more, but I feel fairly confident I could improve if I had less stress and a bit more time.
Any advice?
