Have a school admin job, but want more than anything to teach. How to make the switch when there is a current opening?

Hi everyone, as the title states, I am working as a school administrator at a wonderful school. I do love my job, but I have always wanted to teach. When I got my current job, they had no open teaching positions so I took the admin job instead.

However, we just found out that one of our teachers is leaving unexpectedly and we need someone to fill the role.

I have been so tempted to ask for the job and make the switch but I’m also scared to. I know the school really needs someone to fill the admin role I’m currently in and I think I would not be thought of very well anymore if I started asking for the open teaching job.

Is there any way I could request to make a switch or is it just not a good idea to even try?
