I have been feeling burnt out for a while. I am not sure if it’s justified because my normal hours are about 45 per week (sometimes a little more or less). When we’ve been busy I have worked closer to 50 something hours, but I haven’t been doing that lately. I was trying to put up boundaries with my work hours since I work from home.
I am not getting everything done, though. Then the work I do get done suffers in quality. My coworkers are following up on things. Some things are affecting customers (no big impact tho). If I were to actually do all my responsibilities and get them done on time I’d easily be working 50 hr. weeks all the time.
I have expressed this to management but there has not been much movement. I think part of it is I know what can wait and what I can do C- work on. So while there are some problems that have come up, I think this is more stressful to me than anyone else. People still trust me to do “enough.”
Is it unreasonable to feel overworked when you’re not even consistently over 45 hours (I’m salary)? Should I suck it up and work more hours before people start thinking of me as an under-performer? Are the grasses greener on the other side or is this pretty much every salaried employee’s existence?
Edit: I guess for context my mom is a nurse and regularly works 12 hr days and weekends (and did so while raising me and my sister) so my idea of what’s “too much” work is probably messed up and that’s part of why I’m try to get a gauge here.
