I got a job offer for a temporary contract position in a field I've been trying to get into. It's a really long commute (3hrs there and back) but the pay is twice what I've received in the past. I don't have a car so I would have to get one, I was thinking of getting one for about 5K (good car) that I can pay off in a month or two -> I have a savings that could support me for 3 months without work and my wife currently works and has a car, her salary just covers the bills.
I am inclined to take the position, however my hiring manager stated they don't have a range or approximation for how long my position is for. It's a research position that'll involve the early phase recruitment aspect of the study. I would hate to sign on, get a car and then have the position only last a month or two especially with needing a car. However, I've also been looking for months for a job so this might be a helpful stepping stone.
Any thoughts or advise? Do temporary contract position have a likelihood of lasting less than 3 months?
