Safest way to counter offer

I don't care too much about the extra money but I bid below what I should have and they gave me an offer at that amount. It would be a lot worse to lose the job than get a bit extra so I want to be conservative. I'm thinking of asking if they have room to negotiate first, is that a safe way to go about this?
