Recently lost my job (of 16 months, so not something I can leave off a resume) doing admin. Pre-COVID everything was great. I have ADHD and sleep problems, so transitioning to remote work for the first time ever when COVID hit was scary. It really made clear how important the external structure of the office was for me.
I hung on for a while, though, and had a very positive performance review in the summer. In early September, when work really picked up again, I asked my supervisor for more check ins and guidance with task management as I felt I was having a tough time getting everything done. At the time they seemed very surprised and said they hadn't noticed any changes in performance.
Then over the next few weeks I fucked up: I forgot about a scheduled meeting, and joined two other meetings late. The last straw was missing a scheduled morning meeting because... I overslept and was unreachable for the hour. I was given a warning, but I think it was privately decided to terminate me around this time.
I worked about 1.5 weeks more and then was called into a meeting and told I was being let go because they felt things hadn't improved and I was unreliable. I was given severance and that was it.
For obvious reasons, I am almost exclusively looking at non-remote jobs. But I have no idea how to talk about this situation and certainly don't want to disclose ADHD either. I've learned that I thrive when working with people and as part of a team, but I have no idea what to actually say about why I left in the first place. I completely own my mistakes and know I was in the wrong here, but I also wonder if this would've happened had work never gone remote.
