On my first day at work in a few days, I am scheduled to interview several candidates for a position I will directly supervise. The interview panel includes me, another manager, and my boss.
My boss knows one candidate personally well (personal friends and he supervised him many years ago and liked him). My boss is also this candidate's reference.
We initially scheduled that candidate's interview to exclude my boss b/c he knows him very well. But he emailed in length that he would like to at least listen in and answer any questions, but he will refrain from assessing the candidate after the interview.
I feel slightly uncomfortable with this. In a way, I don't think his presence will affect my decision/assessment of the candidate, but I also feel that it may be unfair for other candidates because this candidate may feel a lot more at ease during the interview because of the personal connection. Any advice?
Thanks!
