Is Standing Up for Stable Work Hours Wrong?

I work at a company where everyone works wild and crazy hours.

I personally work from 6:30 to 3:00pm.

However, there are those who work from 5:30am until 6:00pm and then work on weekends.

There will be days at work when I am in a meeting and someone is still droning on about something around 2:58pm and I’ll say: “I get off work at 3pm, can we continue this tomorrow?”

Sometimes I’ll get a disgruntled moan or an eye roll. Once I even had a spat with my boss who told me that I had to stay and I said I would bill it as overtime. At first she seemed agitated but she agreed.

I realize that companies expect people to go above and beyond, but I feel companies should also go the extra mile if they expect more work out of their employees. For example, if the meeting is going to run beyond my usual end work time - offer overtime (don’t make me ask for it) or schedule part 2 of the meeting for the next day. If it’s something time sensitive then schedule it earlier in the day. Not good enough? Write an email with instructions.

My view may be twisted, but I believe if you hire someone to work an 8 hour shift, don’t expect 10 hours every 2 days and get pissy when your employee asks for overtime.

Companies will always drop you like a hot potato if they have to. So why shouldn’t you stand your ground?
