So I put in my two weeks after accepting an offer that was contingent on a background check and 'pre-employment reference check'. Meanwhile, I have received a company laptop already (since the position is remote) and emails that say 'welcome to the team'. However, my reference check hasn't been completed. It makes me wonder, does HR just see the reference check as something procedural or is there a big chance that my offer will be rescinded if it's not amazing? I have nothing to hide, but it just seems like if references mattered, they wouldn't be sending me a company laptop, etc.

Is a pre-employment reference check really that important?
