is delaying job start date appropriate right now?

hello. i'm a college graduate looking to delay my start date 6 weeks at a fairly large company. when they ask why, could i say something along the lines of “personal emergency” or “prior commitment?” what are the risks with this? is it appropriate during times like these? i don’t want them to rescind the offer if i ask for a later start date
