Hi all, first time poster here (25F). I recently completed my second Masters degree in public health and have been looking for jobs since August. My first Master degree is in hard sciences (cancer biology).
In October I was hired as a research assistant at a private health company for 20hours/week at $22/ hour. I started on a one-month contract which was extended for three months until Feb 2021.
Yesterday HR approaches me saying the company is impressed with my skills and work ethic and would like to offer me a full-time position. I'm excited until I hear the details - 45k per year. After taxes, that is 35k. Which works out to an hourly rate of about $21 (less than what I currently make on contract). It comes with 2 weeks vacation, 10 personal days and no health benefits.
I emailed today asking to negotiate the salary upwards. My friends who graduated from my program are all working in the health sector making at least 60k. I felt that 45k wasn't reflective of my skills and doesn't come close to covering the cost of living in the Greater Toronto Area.
After a few hours, the HR manager emails me saying the management team will discuss my request Monday. So I'm still in limbo.
I'm proud of myself for taking this step and hope I haven't shot myself in the foot. I'm still applying for other full-time opportunities! Anyways this was a big day for me and wanted to share. Do you think I did the right thing?
TLDR: Company I've been working on contract for offered me a full time position at a very low salary. I asked to negotiate and am now waiting to see what they'll say!
