I work in a factory, we manufacture stainless steel goods with combination of older mechanical presses and new 6axis industrial robotics as my company continues to automate. Ive been with the company 3 years and Im very happy with my job, however, I have continued to notice a conflict of interest between in our leadership. Our current longtime factory director of HR, years ago used to fill the role as plant Nurse back when there were several hundred floor workers. Currently this individual fills both roles, workers will go to this Nurse/HR person for any medical assessment during the workday and this person is also in control of any Call-In absences. On multiple occasions I have witness first hand, production being prioritized over personal wellness/safety. (Example: Person told a cut isnt bad/return to the floor and finish there shift and immediately goes to ER after work for 6 stitches. Example: person told/required to show up to work too soon after ER visit, person was on antibiotics/ prescribed painkillers (to the point i consider under the influence), to fufill their role operating heavy machinery and industrial robotics. Example: Known alcoholic being allowed last chance after last chance after last chance yet continued to show up to work intoxicated/drinking in parking lot before hand, i suspect because his role/shift was already understaffed and he was needed to keep the line moving. This person has been fired but i had to raise hell for 8 months and inform the companys legal team of the situation before action was taken.)
Does this sound like conflict of interest? Anything I can do? Like i said i like my job im very ambitious and wish to continue to rise in the company, however this makes me feel uncomfortable at times. My main concern is causing too many waves and hurting my own career potential/future at the company. I am a male, 27 years old.
Additional information: Privately/family owned company in business 75+ years. Majority of workforce has been with company for 35+ years. We are a union shop, i am currently in the union, but will soon be leaving the union for a promotion in the office environment where i will be in much closer contact with this individual.
