After applying for many months for a full time position I was able to finally get an offer in a high cost city on West Coast (currently living in middle cost area Southeast). It's a great position and something I definitely would be interested in taking! The work would be remote until life returns to normal so no urgency to relocate right away
Anyways, the initial offer is a slight pay decrease of about 20% (or 20-26k) on base salary alone. Benefits are good, unlimited PTO, and there probably will be a relocation bonus but still waiting to hear back on that. My current position is a contract to hire position (with about 3-4 current months left) that I have through a staffing agency. I realize that might be paid a a lot higher than I would if it wasn't in a contractor position and I have no idea how much the position would pays for the role I'm currently in if I was an employee. My guess would be that it is less but I'd have access to employment benefits (PTO, health insurance, etc).
Given that the prospective employer knows I'm currently in a contract role - what's the best way to negotiate a higher salary? And what's an acceptable decrease % to target in negotiating it or other benefits that I can consider (bonus, later start date etc.)? I don't expect an exact match to what I'm making now but I hope to at least get closer especially since its a in a high cost living area and the role would be more demanding.
TLDR; Have a great offer across country that requires me to take about a 20% salary cut though my current role is a contract-to-hire position with no guarantee that I will be hired as an employee and with a similar salary as I'm in now. Looking for suggestions on best way to negotiate a higher offer and what to target.
