Hi this is my first office job after college and I'm a little nervous and want to ensure I'm following proper etiquette in this situation. My job is hiring internally for a position, the manager forwarded our team a notice about it and after thinking about it for a day, I ended up responding since it seemed interesting (and I was also told by colleague that I'd be a good fit if it ever came up). I've been in my current position for a year and I like it and I really like my manager! I'm good at it and am not 100% sure if I wanted to switch but just wanted to learn more about the position.
I need help figuring out what to do if:

what if I learn more about it and I don't actually want to leave my department? Is there a polite way of expressing that or am I already too far gone because I enthusiastically expressed interest? Especially since I'm doing so well in my current role, I'm starting to think maybe it was impolite of me to express interest in a position so soon.

what if I do want to switch? how do I notify the other people on my small team? And how do I talk to my manager?

also what happens if I switch and don't like it and want my old position back? Is that even an appropriate question to ask my current manager?!
Its only been a day since I expressed internet and I know these things move fast but I haven't even gotten the chance to message my manager yet. Do I do that now? I was thinking of emailing my manager "I've expressed interest in this position" but I don't know what else to say! Because again it depends on the two above situations. I also don't want to come off as rude and just abandoning my manager and department without saying anything. I'm just really new to all of this!
