Hi Everyone,
I'm at a really tough career crossroad right now and I don't know what to do.
Here's the gist of it: I live in the Bay Area, CA and work for an event company. Right now, due to the Pandemic, things are on hold and I'm being compensated $300/month to get by. This will be my pay until September 2021. Reminder: I'm in the Bay Area and that doesn't even cover my electricity bill. Financially I have been struggling, and I know this job isn't forever, but I also feel bad for considering leaving a job that had treated me so well pre-pandemic.
So, looking at other career paths, this is where I'm confused:
1) I went to school and graded about 5 years ago in Comm/Journalism. I now know that while that is what I love to do, that dream is basically gone and It is a dying profession. Even with that, if I were to write articles here and there / try and do it on my own online, it still wouldn't pay the bills. But I love it, and it doesn't seem like a "job" to me. It is also worthy to note that I put in probably 300+ applications from the time I graduated college to now and only received 3 interviews. From that, no one called back.
2) I really wanted to consider technical trades out of high school but was forced into the whole 4-year Bachelor's degree idea. All of my prerequisites for any trade I would consider are too old, and I would be looking at 6 more years of school when retaking general classes and being on/off the wait lists (Xray Tech, Dental Hygiene, etc.)
3) I have been considering Law School, and that has always been a potential career path for me, but I'm afraid that all of the horrible things I read are true. "Don't put yourself in debt you'll never get out of, a job isn't guaranteed, the money isn't there, you'll hate life, you won't have a family" etc. This has been the option that I've selected recently, but more and more I'm starting to second guess it for the reasons above.
I tried smaller, at-home jobs during the pandemic and offered lots of creative services for free (photography, graphics, web design, etc) but not a single soul or company took me up on the offer so I stopped considering that too.
My financial situation isn't great and I don't know what to do from here, so I'm posting this hoping that someone will be able to offer insight on what they did if they had any of these options / were in my position too. Thank you for reading and I look forward to your feedback.
