After interviewing at a company, I told a recruiter that I was still interested in a job when I am not. He gave me an offer and is willing to accommodate me. How do I fix my mistake and turn him down?
I was interviewing with a company and went through two interviews. The technical problem was interesting but I am not fond of my potential coworkers. I don't think I am a good cultural fit. So, it is looking very unlikely that I want to take the job.
So, when the recruiter did a follow-up interview, he asked me if I was still interested. I thought there might be an additional 'onsite' interview. I was still toying with the idea of working for this company due to my interest in the work. So I said yes. Then he said that he wanted to make me an offer. I fumbled here (and I fully admit this mistake), saying that the compensation may be too low (this is not the case, I just don't think I am a good cultural fit for the company). We negotiated over it and I asked me to give me the weekend to think about it.
He called me later in the day, saying that he managed to increase the compensation. He would still give me the weekend to think about it. I thanked him for his patience. We have a call set up on Monday. How should I turn down his offer, especially as he seems so eager to hire me and I led him on?
