Is it bad that a company is doing cross classification?

I just got hired on my new job couple of months ago and they didn’t tell me that they do cross-classification. For those who don’t know what it is, it is basically when they use you as a cover up or an extra hand for a job you didn’t apply for. I got hired on this job a couple of months ago and during the interview they didn’t tell me that they do that. For most of the jobs I’ve been to, it is illegal. Unless of course they asked you and you accepted it. From what I know, it is illegal to do that especially if you didn’t sign a contract for it. I’m glad I could lend a helping hand, but it is not what I’ve applied for and they’re getting used to it. I’ve seen some articles on web where people say that if a company derails you and makes you do a job you didn’t sign up for in the first place, you need to get out quick.

What’s your thoughts and opinions about this, especially those who’ve experienced this kind of situation? What did you do?
