Hey guys! I work for a Fortune 500 bio pharma company as a graduate intern and I’m seeking advice on how to navigate these next steps.
So I’ve been fortunate enough to turn a 3 month internship into nearly a 2 year job. I had full expectations to join the team when I finished grad school in May but there’s been some shakeups lately and I’m not sure what to do. My boss, Teo, left in Oct for a promotion at another company. My new boss, Doug, gave me some of Teos work and things continued. Now the other 2 team members Christine and Bob both also got job offers elsewhere and left the team leaving me and Doug to finish up the projects. Now I can handle the work and I like what I’m doing but I’m concerned that a transition into a FT role at graduation might not be a viable option.
Doug wants to standardize the levels of the open roles and they will most likely all be Associate Director roles. I spoke with Teo and he advised that even if Doug likes me, having the higher ups sign off on an intern going to an AD role is a big jump that’s not likely to succeed. Doug knows I want a job and to say with the team but has said he doesn’t know what’s going to happen yet. We have a hiring blackout until 1/1 so there’s just these open roles.
There’s a lot of uncertainty and to me this seems like a high risk high reward scenario but I also want to make sure I have a job when I graduate that makes a specific salary. What does Reddit think? How do I move forward? Do I look to a different company? Do I be more blunt with my new boss? Right now I’m an intern doing the work of an Associate Director so I know I can do the work it’s just navigating the whole process. And to provide context, I’m finishing up a doctorate and 2 masters degrees, 1 of which is from an Ivy League school.
Any advice y’all can offer is appreciated!
