Hi all, I am wondering if anyone has any stories or advice about speaking up and making your (negative) opinion known to your manager and others. I know it is pretty taboo depending on the industry so I wanted to know if anyone had experience with this.
Long story short, due to a mini exodus in October 2019 from my team and spiking volume that has not ceased, my team has a backlog of work that has lasted for over a year. This stems from a couple things such as COVID forcing us remote and turning our paper driven physical process into a digital process that was created without any additional software support. We have been behind on our work for over 1 year now and it's not getting any better. During this time, management decided it would be a great idea to introduce 2 new incomplete workflows that are good for the long term, but absolutely disastrous for the short term.
In short, we're fucked. We have clients to answer to and they are absolutely livid. Management understands that things are bad, but I don't believe they understand why. I have spoken with my manager multiple times as I am one of the more senior members of the team. I have tried to come up with a solution but she will say things like, 'what do you think that would do to morale?' To be honest, this makes me think she is completely out of touch with what we are feeling as a team. Morale is about as low as it can be and is dropping every day. Half the people we hired to replace the employees that left have quit this month. We are constantly told our issues are going to be fixed...in 1-2 years.
As a more senior member of the team, I have spoken to my manager one on one. But I now feel the need to speak up during our daily team meeting. She keeps asking every day 'who needs help where?' And honestly the answer is everyone needs help on everything. We just don't have the man power to help.
I'm wondering to those who are more experienced is there even a point to speak up? What could I even say? I know that the management team is aware of these issues, how could they not be? But their solutions, or lack thereof, is driving their teams into extreme burnout. Their inability to fix this situation is quite frankly, astounding. If COVID weren't a thing I would guess many of my co-workers would have quit by now. Is there anything I can say to help defend my team or would it be best to bit my tongue and keep applying for new roles?
TL;DR - perfect storm of COVID/management incompetence has my team in a tight spot, should I speak up?
