I first wanted to thank this sub. I have lurked for months while applying for jobs, and have utilized lots of the advice I learned in this subreddit during my application process this time around, so thank you dearly. This has been a long year! I started a new job at the beginning of the year, which I lost due to Covid over the summer. The past ~6 months since then have been sooo stressful - I really struggled to find this new job during the pandemic (as you can see from the stats) and finances/the application process took a toll on my happiness. After months of applying, though, I finally received a great offer at a company which I have taken!
I tracked every application (position, company, date, link) I sent in a spreadsheet and its status (highly recommended!), so here are some of the obligatory stats I tracked:
- Total Time Applying: 5 months
- Applications Sent: 153
- Rejections: 46 (39 rejections off-the-bat, 7 after interviews)
- HR Interviews: 8
- Full Interviews: 5
- Offers: 1
Resume
About ~50 applications in, I redesigned my resume from scratch. I highly recommend taking a few hours, stop applying to jobs, and give your resume some serious TLC, and perhaps even redo it completely! I redid mine while trying to really sell myself and the work I had done. I noticed after redoing my resume, I started getting more interview offers - whereas I only got 1 for the previous 50 applications.
I'm a software developer, so my application process, experience, and resume won't be the same as others. I hope, though, you can see some of the general lessons I learned after redoing my resume in the attached before/after. Be specific/concise, use an ATS-compatible theme, get rid of bells and whistles, use numbers and statistics, sell yourself, and explain how what you did benefited/affected the company. Try to tie the description of your work with the resulting impact of what you did.
I removed/rewrote all information that could be used to identify, so there's some rough formatting here and there, but here's the before/after:

---
I really wish the best of luck to all of you who may be searching for a job right now. It's hard and exhausting - these are difficult times and the application system is just flat-out broken. I wish I could give you the perfect advice, but just keep at it, keep up your confidence, and don't be afraid to really sell yourself like you're the best damn thing (you probably are, though!). Best of luck, thanks again to all the advice from the subreddit, and let me know if I can be of any help.
