How do you determine if the compensation/benefits are good?

I accepted a job with 40k salary. I tried to negotiate to 45k-50k salary but they turned it down saying that plus benefits it would be 50k.

I didn't think much about it then since it is my first job out of college. Now I would like to find out if that is really a good thing.

How do you determine if the compensation/benefits are good enough? How do you take it into account when determining salary?
