I recently was a firefighter making around 40k a year but left because I was putting in around 70-80 hours a week. We had a policy where we had to do mandatory overtime which was 2 24 hour shifts with one day off then another day of our regular 24 hour shift. So, they salary came out to 40k because we put in a lot of hours, but hourly it still came out to 13 to 15 an hour. Switched to IT and have CompTIA trio and Microsoft Expert Admin certs but I make 14 an hour at help desk because I could not find any other IT jobs in my area. Took a pay cut to get experience, and I don't really feel valued at this employer, underpaid, and management has poor leadership. I wonder if I made the right choice in the long run though, despite the pay cut at the moment.
