interested in sea freight shipping

apologies if this is not the right place for this - if not please point me in the right direction

I’m looking for information on how to get involved in the world of overseas freight shipping. I currently work for a class I railroad in North America and have been considering other employment since my last furlough (about 8 months ago).

I’m looking to find out what type of requirements employers look for in successful applicants and the general lay of the land, but any info would be appreciated. I don’t have any formal education aside from my high school diploma and have been on the railroad about 5 years now.
