I majored in psychology with full intention of going to graduate school and eventually getting a PhD. I was leaning towards cognitive or animal behavior and was going to use the time after graduation to decide for sure. My intention was to go into industry and have academia as a backup. But I'm having a crisis now because I have no idea what to do with my life now.
When researching PhD stuff, I was checking mostly pro-academia sources and communities. I was looking at /r/jobs and older posts about psychology PhDs and found mostly negative things. People were saying there were no jobs at all, it was too specialized, and the degree wasn't that useful. It's completely different from what I've heard elsewhere. I like research a lot, but I'm not in love with any particular topic (besides animal behavior) and I would like to have a job one day. I'm thinking that I probably shouldn't go for a PhD, but I'm not sure what to do now.
I have decent research experience that will be completely worthless. I even did an honors thesis. I don't have great background in statistics or coding, so I can't say I got many transferable skills. I'm going to look into other psychology fields like IO, human factors, and UX/UI, but I've done research on them in the past and I wasn't that interested. I feel like I'm going to end up stuck on a path that I hate.
Right now, my temporary plan is to look into online coding bootcamps so I at least have that as a skill. My tentative plan is to look into cognitive science master's programs, but I don't know how lucrative that path is. I don't know what jobs I should even be considering at this point. I feel so lost and I hate that I wasted my time on this degree.
