I feel like a loser but I'm too ashamed to admit I'm unemployed to my family (long distance)

I've always worked hard but unfortunately the last year or so has been difficult. I finally got a decent longterm temp assignment that was supposed to be a year but my abusive bully boss terminated me after 3 months (after researching it turns out the person I replaced was also fired so they have a history of letting bullies blame others for their own mistakes)

Anyway my mother has been ill and is staying with my sister and her family back east. Every time I speak to them they ask me how work is going and I lie and pretend I'm still working. I don't want to explain what happened or talk about it. Has anyone else done this?
