I got fired for some grey area misconduct, do I tell the truth in the interview?

Hi all,

So I am a plaintiff lawyer that was working for a plaintiff firm. Outside the scope of my role in the firm, I was representing a friend pro bono in a case. The lawyers I was up against sent my employer a record of my pro bono work and they fired me for “representing myself as a lawyer outside the scope of my employment with the firm.”

I could have done things differently, but overall the sentiment amongst the lawyers I’ve spoken with is that my firm overreacted. In fact, some have said that the termination is wrongful and I potentially have a case.

Tomorrow I have an interview with a firm on the opposing side. I’m well qualified and was referred by two friends at the firm. The legal market, like everyone else, has been hit hard by the pandemic. A recruiter has told me to just say my lay-off was Covid-19 related. That said, I’m uncomfortable with lying. My former firm could open themselves up to liability by giving the reason for the termination in my state so I’m not sure if they would say, but that’s my calculus not theirs.

I’m not sure if I should just tell the new employer the reason if they ask or not. What do you all think?
