I was laid off a few months ago. I’m 45. I have a BA and MBA from fancy schools and have worked in tech and media.
I guess the right thing to do would be to get back into the employment pool.
I’m too old and experienced to take a grunt job. I think I’d be frustrated with my experience going to waste, more than the low pay.
I look at the senior level jobs though, and I don’t want them either. I don’t want to be on call 24-7, chained to the business.
I just want to be respected (ie paid) for my experience, not how much I can work myself to the bone. But I guess that’s the economy we live in, right?
If I want to be paid for my experience, I'd prefer to work 1.1x hours as a grunt and get paid 1.5x.
Instead, it seems my only choice is to work 2x hours of a grunt and get paid 4x.
I think the only ones able to do that these days are the rainmakers in finance with a book of connections (who did their massive hours in their 20s), and some senior devs who still enjoy high demand for their skills — or some unionized trades that respect master craftsmen.
My experience is in tech and media, but I don’t fit any of those categories.
I can understand younger people working crazily because they have no savings, the inequality gap is huge, and they need to hone their chops.
I understand older people taking the plunge if they have a wife and kids to support, or they’ve enjoyed some momentum on the way to becoming the top dog.
But I’m single and I have savings. I can keep myself entertained without working. Do I still need to get back in the employment pool? Is my view of the working world as it is right now skewed?
