How to approach leaving last job due to travel?

Hi,

So I'm getting killed in phone screens where they ask about my last job. I quit (on good terms, gave notice) because the director was a maniac and because I felt like traveling. When I came back from my travels, COVID had already tanked the job market.

So when I'm asked why I'm not working right now, what should I say? I've heard employers hold contempt for workers who can arbitrarily leave a job. Obviously I don't mention the director being a maniac. I just say "I left to travel and then came back during COVID."
