I applied to a job at a place where 3 years ago I spent a year interning with great feedback and where I left on positive terms. I’ve continued to volunteer for this org for years, and have been asked to help with special projects, most recent one being maybe 3 months ago. A couple of years back old my direct supervisor who is still at the org sent me a job opening and mentioned she wished I would apply for it.
In early June the perfect opening came up, I applied, waited a couple weeks, followed up, waited a couple more weeks, followed up again, and still haven’t heard back. It’s been a little over a month now since I applied, and I haven’t heard anything. I can see that the hiring manager has opened my emails. I followed the instructions and I have relevant experience and prior work history at the org. The posting is still up, and it was posted after COVID started. I also reached out to to my old supervisor to see if she‘d be willing to chat about the role after I applied, and received no reply from her (didn’t follow up as felt it would be annoying).
Now I’m debating whether it’s worth a final follow up to ask for feedback; something along the lines of “hey, I haven’t heard back so I’m assuming that you’ve moved ahead with other candidates for the role. I would love any feedback you’d be willing to provide on my application, thanks so much”?
Thoughts on sending that to the hiring manager and/or my old supervisor? Is that aggressive/annoying? I’m genuinely just shocked that I haven’t heard back at all, it’s a very small org (under 25 people) and I know at least a quarter of the staff well enough that if I were to see them at the store I’d stop and say hi.
I manage our hiring in my current role and understand that things get busy and not everyone who is not a good fit will always get a response, but given the relational context I just really expected I would have been at least given a “hey thanks for applying but we moved forward with someone who has more relevant experience for the role”.
I was really, really excited about this opportunity as I’ve wanted to work there for a long time, so I’m having a hard time just letting it go.
