Covering for someone who’s on vacation- what’s normal?

Hi guys,

So I got my first office job in December and I’m still working there. I’m the only one in my family who’s had an office job before so sometimes I’m not sure what’s ‘normal.’

I work in a fairly big department but then there’s me and two other people who do the same job within that department . We have a group email and receive emails from different people within our company. The work is split up so I deal with emails from certain people and my coworkers have their certain people they’re assigned to too. Sorry for the lack of details but my work is a little unique so I don’t want anyone I work with to put two and two together. I can however say that my job is very busy. Actually the whole department I’m in is constantly busy and I believe we’re somewhat understaffed given the amount of work we have to put up with.

Anyway, my coworker took a weeklong vacation last week. It was scheduled and fine, but when she was gone, I had to do pretty much all of her work. My other coworker helped some but she was too busy with her own work so I think she answered a total of two emails. I was drowning for most of the week. I answered emails quickly but there were other parts of the job, like filing and putting in data, that I neglected some because of lack of time. I went in an hour early every day, didn’t take lunch, and stayed late. I still never felt caught up. On Friday, I managed to somewhat organize my coworker’s work so it wouldn’t be too chaotic for when she got back, but my own work is definitely in chaos right now.

So my question: Last week I did the job of two people and even though it wasn’t perfect, I replied to emails and got a lot of things done in a very timely manner. Is it normal to get anything for covering for a coworker in an office job? Maybe what I ‘get’ is just that when I use the few PTO days I have, my coworker will have to suffer through my work like I did for her? All week I was angry to be drowning in the work of two people without being paid a dime more. Maybe I’m too optimistic but what’s common when you’re in an office and your coworker goes on vacation? Do you really just deal with a hectic week and look forward to the time it’s you on vacation? There’s no reward for all the stress and work you put in when you come in and deal with double the workload?
