Applying for a city job. Tips?

Recently applied for a desk job with my local government, handling records and reports. I've applied with this department before as a custodian, being passed over the first time. I was unfortunately very nervous at the first interview, and I fear that may have skewed my chances the first time. In retrospect, I did realize my answers sounded very phony the first time (Being in a public service setting, I expressed my eagerness to help people and my respect for service and authority) and may have come off as blatant lip service. While I'm glad they want to give me a second chance, I have no doubt they will recognize me and may judge me based on my previous attempt.

I have taken steps to train myself to the position, taking several online courses in people skills and refreshing my knowledge of office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.) programs (I had taken classes in High school teaching me these programs before, though my previous (First) job did not make use of these). I have also taught myself coding over the years, mainly HTML, CSS, Java, mostly for fun.

This'll be my second job, after 3 years with my first one. It might be aiming a little high, but I am interested in public service, and for the most part, I just want a stable job after the unpredictability of retail.

With all that said... any tips?
