Hello,
I've already posted this on r/remotework, but wanted to put it here as well just to get more input.
I've just finished typing this and it is quite long, so a TLDR is included above the...."essay" I wrote on this.
TLDR: What information is normal to be requested from a remote employer? How to tell if something is an elaborate S Tier phishing scheme? What is the normal hiring process like?
I was recently contacted about taking a well paying job as a data entry clerk in the medicine research field. I leapt at the opportunity when I saw the pay on CareerBuilder, and as a result was very enthused when I heard back.
I would really love this job as it would be a life changer for me, but there are a few alarm bells going off in my head, and I am unsure if it is my lack of experience job hunting/remote working or if there is cause for concern.
Here are some details:
- I was contacted via text early in the morning, where I spoke with one individual, who just wanted to check in to see if I was still interested in the position.
- After confirming, I was told to download the Wire secure messenger app. On there I spoke to a hiring manager, and we went over some details. As well as conducted an interview. This struck me as strange, since usually people want to hop on a phone/video call to get a gauge of who they are working with. This may come across as silly, but once, when listening to a podcast, the founder/head of Wordpress stated that his company is almost entirely remote, and that because of the worldwide talent pool, different schedules working together, etc, written communication was seen as a major priority during the hiring process. So I figured this could be a similar view.
- Through this conversation, his English struck me as strangely underdeveloped, a telltale sign of many scams, but the company boasts offices/labs in Europe, and the US, so I looked past it. Also on their Linkedin, it seems as if the majority of the employees who linked their account as from outside of the US. Unfortunately Linkedin will not let me click on their accounts, but they seem to be standard Linkedin type photos, and there are over 20 people.
- None of the questions were too intrusive, until we arrived at my personal information. They requested for me to confirm my full name, address, phone number, etc.
- I figured this was par for the course since they would not be meeting me in person. But still felt uneasy providing anything to a stranger I never spoke to or have seen.
- The person I spoke with eventually concluded the interview and said they were going to forward my information to their hiring board. At which point I expected a lengthy wait, but heard back within an hour that I was approved to be hired and that we would move on to the next steps.
- Here's where things get kind of fishy to me. It is a very well paying job, the company is willing to pay for my equipment (by sending me a check for which they would provide tracking), they are understanding about me needing to give at least two weeks before I leave my current position. They in passing asked me what bank I used, to which I replied because we were talking about direct deposit options. But felt uneasy about that (I've never had a job with direct deposit as an option).
- Fast forward to where we are now, I have been emailed an agreement that needs to be signed and returned before they can consider me an employee. I understand that the remote nature of the work does require me to provide identification, but I feel uneasy about providing what was asked of me. I was told to provide:
- a scan of my passport or driver's license in color
- proof of address such as a utility bill, etc.
So now this leaves me feeling quite uncomfortable as someone new to the remote work scene. This employer would essentially possess all of my sensitive information such as: what bank I use, my full name + address, my age, my driver's license or passport, and a scan of a proof of address.
I've looked into them online, but there isn't a lot as they claim to have started in early 2019. They have a beautiful/professional website and a Linkedin profile that seems to be tied to real people. I'm in the process of researching some more info as I'm not yet satisfied. Maybe I'll ask to video chat with somebody soon just to be more comfortable but even then I'm a little worried.
Please let me know if you think I have stars in my eyes or if I've been jaded by years at shitty jobs.
