No updates on Indeed applications?

I've applied for a handful of jobs on Indeed.com. I try to avoid applying through Indeed when I can, and instead apply through the employer's website, but sometimes it can't be avoided. I have never received a response to any of my applications - positive or negative. I don't even get a form email when my application has been rejected. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a way to check on your application status through Indeed, or would I be better off contacting the employer directly?
