I work from home for a tiny software company as a client account manager My boss, the company owner, is a micromanaging control freak who scrutinizes and criticizes everything I do, to the point where I'm afraid to do anything at work for fear that I'm doing it wrong.
Here's a prime example: On Thursday at 4pm (I leave at 5pm), he asked me how comfortable I would be giving a client demo. I said I wasn't super comfortable and I needed enough time to review processes, build the demo, etc. He told me on Friday, which was a half day for me, that the demo would be given on today at 2pm. I had 2 graduation parties this weekend, so I didn't work at all, and today I already had a call scheduled, so I was able to dedicate 2 hours to building this demo and reviewing these materials before presenting them. I got on the web conference, I got super nervous, and the whole thing flopped. To top it off, there were coding issues that I didn't recognize (I'm not a web developer) that needed to be brought to the dev team's attention.
I got a call after the demo ended from my boss who said: "I strongly believe you didn't prepare for this demo and that you went in cold. You wouldn't have missed the critical error codes in the system had you been prepared." At this point, I know not to argue with him, because he doesn't buy anything I put out, so I just took it on the chin and apologized, hung up the phone and cried.
I've been interviewing for 5 months, I finally landed a position this past weekend, and now I'm just waiting for the written offer once my background check/drug test go through (which will both be clean :) ).
My question is: with someone as controlling and abrasive as he is, how do I give my notice while minimizing backlash? The person who worked in my position previously told me that this dude made her life a living hell for two weeks and she ducked out early because she couldn't take it (I reached out to her on Facebook since I knew her in a previous life).
