Changing my name for job applications

This might be an odd one..but I need to discuss it with you guys.

I have a quite ethnic, middle eastern name. It actually probably has an awkward connotation to it in the United States due to some history. I really don't prefer my name myself and quite often like to go by a nickname.

Earlier today I read this post in r/resumes and it struck me.

This post got me thinking. as an undergrad from a (decent?) university, I've had barely any replies from companies in the states. Being in engineering, 80% of the companies I'm really interested in are based there. Even outside of the states though, while applying for internships, my own classmates have applied to the same positions, with (slightly) more experience and got the position. I didn't even get interviews. I'm not completely blaming my lack of success on my name, but could this be a possibility? Should I go undercover and change my name to a more western one on applications? Are there any consequences down the road? Based on the post I linked, many people experienced the same thing and ended up using a different name. I just don't want to let my name get in the way of my career.

But then there's the thought that oh well if a company discriminates you based on your name/background/ethnicity then you don't wanna work there anyway. Please let me know your thoughts, this is getting to my head, and the job search is exhausting on its own.

Edit: just saw this post on LinkedIn. We need to talk about this way more in the space of recruiting. This is so unfair.
