I work in Corrections (Prison Guard stuff). I'm a Lieutenant and I make $58,000 a year base pay (excluding any overtime) in a position that does not require higher education. I hate the work and I want out. My wife has been encouraging me to look at teaching. I have a bachelors degree in Criminal Justice, but my first declared major was Elementary Education.
I've been looking at the salary schedules and credentialing requirements and it appears I would take an almost $20,000 pay cut after paying a few thousand to get my credentials and that's at the highest paying district. Is this to be expected? I just cant believe they get paid less than uneducated prison guards like my peers. If I'm reading this Salary Scedule correctly, I would have to work for years and earn my masters just to make what I make now! That's unreal to me.
How do teachers supplement their income to make ends meet? I'd be interested in coaching cross country to make some extra money and because I'm a fanatical runner anyway.
