Town Hall: Lets talk about r/jobs!

Greetings everyone!

I want to start off by saying thanks to everyone who contributes to the r/jobs community. I've personally read many many well-thought out and unique perspectives since first joining this subreddit many years ago, and as someone who works in an HR space, this community reaffirms my passion to continue doing what I love. Especially during these uncertain times, the solidarity I see here is amazing.

In this spirit of this community (and Reddit itself) built on the foundation that it is by the people and for the people, I wanted to open a Town Hall to discuss the state of the subreddit with incoming updates we are working on, as well as to hear from you on any changes you would like to see, concerns you have, or other general feedback.

As I open this discussion, the goal in mind is for us to create a stronger community culture within r/jobs. While there are definitely tons of people that come in, post a question, and then never return (which is totally fine!), I believe we need to create a stronger culture to set a standard for everyone posting so that they immediately know what we are about, the rules, and maybe even so that they stick around! I firmly believe this will help boost the quality of the questions and responses we will see going forward.

A note from the moderators on what's coming down the pipeline:

  • Subreddit Mission: We will be making the core mission that you see on the side bar more clear. It currently states this subreddit is for those who are looking to learn how to find a job and leave a job, as well as general subjects around job searching, but we plan on making it more clear and to the point.

  • Wiki: We are working on creating a Wiki for this subreddit to further explain the rules as well as provide some resources if we think that the question is better suited for another subreddit or somewhere else. As an example, this Wiki will provide a good example on what is considered solicitation and what isn't.

  • AutoMod Updates: We are looking to enhance the AutoMod in a few ways. One way is sharing the Wiki in the appropriate circumstance once it is created, and another big one is having the AutoMod communicate that a moderator will approve posts made by throwaway accounts since we receive tons of messages with people asking why their posts aren’t visible.

  • Moderation Team Improvements: We are assessing moderator activity and may be looking for new moderators to join our team. A follow-up thread on that will be posted soon. We will also be reviewing how we are moderating to ensure every action can clearly be tied back to the rules.

Now turning the discussion over to the community. Please be civil and cordial, of course. If your concerns are targeted to someone in particular (be it a member or a moderator), I would prefer that you use the message the moderator tool. Will try to have this up for about a week based on responses.
