Thoughts on navigating internal job application

I work as a project manager in healthcare in a midsized city. I support several divisions within my department (lets call it General Surgery) however the largest division within the department (GI Surgery) has their own dedicated PM (its at a Senior level). Due to several changes, the Senior PM role is now open and I am thinking of applying as it is a step up in terms of being at a higher level, better pay (I hope) etc. In my opinion, I am a strong candidate being one of the only other PMs in Surgery, being at the organization a long time and a lot of experience and familiarity with players and the work being done (again my opinion but cant say for sure what the hiring manager/team would think)

However I am up in my head about some dynamics and needed some additional perspective

  1. Should I inform my manager I am applying for the role? (side bar about my manager: we have a good relationship and generally supports my career however I raised the issue of a promotion and a raise in December during my annual review in December and till now he hasnt gotten back to me with a definitive answer which is really upsetting)
  2. How do I navigate or think about the implications of my applying? Because once my application is submitted everything changes. Although I currently do not work directly with the GI Surgery folks we know each other informally and have exchanged a few emails for information purposes. MY thinking is that by applying I am 1) indirectly putting pressure on them or putting them in a tough spot whether or not I am eventually selected for the position (not sure if that makes sense but just my thinking) 2) i changes the dynamics of our potentially collaborating together - if that is required in the future. 3) would the hiring team "struggle" with hiring me because they may not want to poach me from my current role (recognizing that they know my current manager and at least have an idea of some of the work i do - especially being the only other PM supporting the other divisions?

Am I overthinking this? Appreciate your insights

Thanks!

PS - Some additional context: All the key players in the department know each other well and have at least worked or collaborated in some way formally or informally (so myself, my current manager, the hiring manager, other surgeons that work closely together all at least know each other or have worked closely) so you can see how it may potentially get awkward
