Job hunting after only being at my first job five months

Hey all,

I graduated college in May of last year and immediately started with a company. Long story short, I got burned out after a few months, and I don't think my old boss liked me very much because my production wasn't where he wanted it to be for how long I had been there. I also didn't like him very much because he never explicitly said I was doing a bad job, but the way he behaved towards me made one of my coworkers and a few other people I know professionally think that he was bullying me and targeting me because he didn't like me. I decided to meet with him privately in his office, so I could try to get help and more training to be more productive, to see what we could do to address the burnout, and to get a clearer idea of his view of my job performance and his expectations. He basically told me that the job was going to be the way it was going to be and that he didn't know of any way to help me get more productive, and that I needed to do some soul-searching and see if that particular job was for me or not, and if it wasn't, then he wanted to know sooner rather than later. I decided that it wasn't, and I left that job at the beginning of October and have been job hunting since.

I know the president of this particular company, which is a midsized company based in a small town I grew up in. He had met with me in his office while I was in school, and he gave me some guidance and direction (which I appreciate). A few weeks after I resigned, he emailed me and asked to meet with me again. He basically asked what happened, and I told him about burnout. He said he understood and that burnout happens quite a bit with people entering my role right out of college. He was also aware of the production issues, and he even told me not to feel bad about it because it comes to some people faster than others. He also told me I was welcome to use him as a reference.

However, I'm having a hard time explaining to prospective employers what happened at my old job and why I left after a few months. I don't want to mention production issues or burnout as a reason I left, nor do I want to badmouth my old boss. I'm worried that my old boss will tell people not to hire me when they call him.

How do I handle this situation?
