What are your experiences in regards to following up after interviews?

I was in the Education field for about a decade and mainly got jobs through connections and more informal interviews where I was hired on the spot.

I'm moving into the corporate side of things now and it's a big cultural change. I had some great interviews in February. I've always been of the mindset that--if someone wants to hire me--they'll contact me. I normally interview and leave the onus on the company to call me for a second interview and so on.

Does following up after interviews ever really have a positive outcome? Or do you just find out sooner rather than later if they decided not to hire you?
