Years of Experience Requirement

From all of your experiences, when a job requires 3, 5, and even 10 years of experience, how many years are they really asking for in an ideal situation?

I’ve had many circumstances where I tick all the boxes, have the minimum years, and still get denied by the ATS. I know it’s not an issue with resume formatting or anything like that. I’m wondering what everyone’s thoughts are.
