I have 4 felony convictions from 5 years ago from a plea bargain I took. They are all from the same case and 3 of them are sexual offences. The plea bargain was 6 months probation (no jail or prison time) and no requirement to register as a sex offender.
They stem from a contentious divorce that got out of hand and my ex-partner actually had to agree to the plea bargain for it to be approved.
As you can see, the convictions have nothing to do with my career field or IT at all and I have actually had two jobs since getting the conviction, however, neither of the jobs required a background check.
I just received an offer for a new software job via a recruiter and he told me they do background checks. I actually did a self background check and my convictions did not come up.
In the simplest terms, how should I address this? I'm almost expecting to be denied because my convictions are "icky" but they have nothing to do with my job at all.
Edit - From what I understand, employers can't (or, aren't supposed to) deny job seekers unless the conviction is related to the job. Can someone maybe clarify this and any exceptions that come into play?
