I work for an elderly millionaire. He has the money to run an unprofitable business, as well as to pay my salary. The business is just a hobby for him. All he wants is for us to show up, then he launches into a monologue that can last hours.. This is my typical day at work: I sit, I listen, I do no work, I get paid (lots of money).
The problem is that I want to develop my skills rather than waste every day. I also want to do freelance work on the side. But how can I do either when my boss won't let me work? His endless monologues swallow up half of my working day...EVERY DAY!
To the outside world, it seems like I have the perfect job: I do no work and get paid lots of money. But the reality is that it's hell. I feel my brain rotting while time passes by, filling me with guilt for the needed skills I'm not learning.
I know that the logical solution is to ask him to cut down his monologues so that we may actually generate money for his failing business. But he prefers the charade and he hates being interrupted. I don't want to annoy him, but I need time to work.
I don't want to quit, I'm looking for another solution. Any thoughts?
