What purpose does this assessment serve?

I recently applied for a retail management position at Belk. Nothing extreme but my background fit pretty well, and I put a ton of effort into my resume and cover letter.

A day after I applied I was sent an assessment. One was for Problem Solving, and the other was for How I Work.

I've been doing retail for 5 years and have never seen anything like this. The questions felt absurd.

What is the first letter of a word that is for an open piece of land for crops or animals? P, F, Q, or H

There was a question very similar to that. And other vocab word questions. A bit of math...etc.

Then the 'How I work' one. I remember taking it with my roommate in the room with me and the whole time we were interpreting the majority of the questions differently.

Knowing I was rejected almost immediately after made me feel as if the assessment weeded me out, and I am just floored a tool like that has the ability to tell them everything they would need to know about me.

I'm so discouraged because I really wanted to work for this company but if that assessment is something I'm going to keep running into, I don't even want to bother anymore.

When I applied to a corporate position with them they never sent me any type of assessment and I haven't heard back for that either. But at least I feel like I am being fairly assessed and not judged by a survey.

Is anyone familiar with these assessments? Or what exactly they can tell a company.
